The Thing in the Basement - MAMA Contest Entry by madadman The Thing in the Basement - MAMA Contest Entry by madadman
This is my entry into the Mama Scared Stiff Contest. We were asked to depict something that scared us as a child so I decided to group a variety of those things into one digital painting.

As a child, one of my biggest fears was musty, damp basements. They were filled with things like spiders, old creepy looking pipes & machines and dark corners where evil things lurked. I always imagined some kind of ghost monster living in my aunt's basement that was making all the strange noises that kept my imagination running on overdrive.

I put a lot of symbolism in this painting. I mashed together a combination of certain elements that gave me the creeps when I was a kid. The teddy bear represents the toys that took on a distorted scary appearance when the lights went out. In the dark, even the most innocuous things can seem threatening when you're a kid.
